American flight controllers are more and more seeking second jobs and calling in sick, as they continue to work without pay amid the federal closure, the transportation secretary has announced.

"These professionals are wearing thin," Sean Duffy told Fox News on the weekend, as some flights were halted on the California shoreline due to personnel deficits.

Following the government shut down on October 1st, air traffic controllers, who are considered critical staff, were instructed to keep doing their jobs uncompensated.

But some have been missing, causing terminals to halt or reduce their plane traffic, which has exacerbated setbacks caused by climate and other issues.

More than 3,000 US flights were delayed on Sunday, and the secretary stated he anticipates the circumstances to deteriorate further.

"I am seeing the pressure," he said in an discussion on Sunday Morning Futures, adding that he had spoken to multiple professionals to listen to their worries directly.

"They're taking side jobs, they're out there looking, 'Should I drive Uber, am I able to find an alternative of earnings to cover expenses?'" he added.

The secretary added that on the previous day 22 alerts at airfields indicated travel would be delayed due to a lack of workers - one of the highest after the shutdown started.

He has repeatedly warned that aviation regulators would slow down the quantity of aircraft in the air if there is a shortage of safety personnel.
