French officials have consented to begin intercepting migrant vessels in the English Channel, after an extended period of insistence from the UK.

This policy shift follows the British leader sent a letter to the French leader asking him to back the plan and saying there presently "have no effective deterrent" in the Channel.

French security forces will be allowed to stop the migrant vessels at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their passengers, according to authoritative statements.

French authorities have rarely intervened to prevent the heavily loaded boats leaving the shoreline because it is viewed as excessively high a risk to both officers and individuals.

"It is essential that we implement these tactics this month... We have no effective prevention in the Channel."

Now, a French maritime police representative says personnel will begin taking action at sea, with the aim of protecting lives.

Significantly, the spokesperson excluded the use of nets to intercept boats, which had previously been reported as a potential technique to disable the engines of the vessels.

The decision to take action at all is a major step forward, coming after a brief shift towards a more aggressive approach this summer, which ceased when the former Interior Minister left government.

That was highlighted in July, preceding a summit between the Prime Minister and President, when French police were witnessed wading into the sea to slash the sides of a boat.

Now French authorities will again be permitted to intercept boats before they pick up migrant individuals from the coastal areas of France's north coast, although it's uncertain how the vessels will be prevented.

Powerful gusts are presently delaying the commencement of intervention operations and the people-smuggling networks will be seeking methods to adapt to evade interception, as they have done so often in the past.

The Home Office and Downing Street have been approached for comment.
