Citizens have assembled around the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-initiated offensive on October 7th, 2023, as talks advanced in the neighboring country over a resolution to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

The attack saw more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust.

Israel responded by initiating a armed campaign in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its figures are considered trustworthy by the United Nations and other world agencies.

"Our violent enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister stated on that day.

He also vowed to "realize all the objectives of the war: the release of all the kidnapped, the destruction of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will not present a threat to Israel".

Remembrance Events Across Israel

The government authorities delayed formal memorials until October 16th - after the completion of the festive season - but events still took place around the country on Tuesday.

A remembrance service for the families of Israelis killed in the Hamas assault was held in the coastal city. Organized by the victims' relatives, it was aired throughout Israeli TV networks.

Hours earlier, a minute's silence was respected around the country.

Peace Talks in Egypt

At the same time, both sides' representatives gathered in the North African Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of indirect talks to review the terms of the plan.

A senior delegate involved in the negotiations said that an evening round of mediated discussions commenced at 7 PM local time.

The source explained the earlier meeting ended without concrete outcomes, amid differences over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not restart fighting after the opening period of the agreement.

He added that the discussions are "challenging and have not yet produce any major advancement," but noted that facilitators are working hard to reduce the gaps between the both parties.

Critical Issues in Talks

  • A lasting ceasefire
  • The exchange of the hostages still held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Arrangements for humanitarian aid provision
  • Future governance of the region

Public Sentiment

In Tel Aviv's public square that day, young a woman - whose family member lived through the incident on the gathering, where many attendees were murdered and numerous more were taken hostage by Hamas militants - explained: "No place feels like home now and until every captive return not a single person will be secure."

"After we see everyone home once more, we can feel relief anew. Then we can begin to heal," she concluded.

In front of the leader's residence in the capital, people congregated to demonstrate their backing for the relatives of the abducted. Israel reports 48 stay in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are considered to be surviving.

Demonstrator a participant remarked: "We need do any agreement needed for the abducted to be released. But we sincerely need promises that we will be safe."

Surveys now frequently demonstrate that about 70% of Israeli citizens prefer the war to finish in return for the freedom of the captives.

Palestinian Conditions

At the area of the music event, mourners came together to pay their respects.

From the site, the boom of military attacks and artillery could be noticed just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses said the intense Israeli attacks continued.

In the main city, air and artillery strikes were reported in the early hours of that day in the western neighborhood, area and Nasr areas and in the eastern area of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.

"Once the evening falls, the anxiety appears with it," relocated Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli air strike earlier, described.

"Me and my three children are afraid of the bombings. Throughout the evening we are lying together, clinging, especially my smallest child who rests his head on me all night."

"Continuously we check the reports to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be finalized and that the conflict will come back to us."

Humanitarian Situation

The healthcare center in Gaza City reported it had accepted the remains of six people by the midday, including several who died in an Israeli attack in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.

Another medical facility in the south region of Khan Younis said two more fatalities had been brought there. A person was killed by Israeli troops while attempting to get aid to the south, medics said.
