Our team is verifying video footage and photographs shared earlier today that depict the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive blast that Russian officials say fatally injured a high-ranking military officer in Moscow. Russian authorities stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that exploded and that he succumbed of his wounds. A probe is currently ongoing. Our starting point to check the location from which the pictures originated was based on social media reports saying the blast happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the capital city of Russia. We used panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to corroborate the unique yellow hue of a nearby residential complex captured in the footage. Locating additional buildings, lamp-posts and the street layout verified the exact location the pictures were captured. We also checked that the videos were recent and that the visuals had not undergone digital alteration.
