Although not quite at the equivalent scale as granting clemency to holiday birds, but the Miami-Dade County mayor conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven. Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood. “This animal is guiltless. Clemency is justified for her. She has committed zero crimes,” Levine Cava said in a speech with clear references to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued since the onset of a second term in office. “Unless you count eating six or seven apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “I hope she experiences a lengthy and joyful existence without fear.” The gathering, which both honors and questions the local cultural practice of consuming swine during the holidays, was created to emulate the yearly bird sparing at the White House. Annually, we are delighted to mark heritage and mercy in a way distinctively Miamian.” Participants enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach croquetas and strong coffee as they celebrated the pig's pardon.
