What We Know Concerning the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Shooting

A minimum of 16 individuals perished and in excess of 40 were hurt when assailants fired on a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities have called a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, authorities have announced the death toll is 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 injured people were taken to medical facilities.

The deceased are still awaiting officially identified, but investigators think their ages span from 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the victims who have been named at this time.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She told the events leading up to the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, a senior official expressed that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the message continued.

One Child

A child who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was among those killed during the attack, as per reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still under care, with several in critical condition. Those hurt include two police officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
